Artist Statement

Bubbles

Bubbles symbolize purity and cleanliness. They started from a pure, childlike idea that people should quit smoking by picking up the habit of blowing bubbles. This idea has morphed into a reflection of female purity and its cultural numerical value.

Motion

My motion art was inspired by film. The idea was to boil a video down into one still image to create motion and the feeling of energy. There is a sense of mania in the motion works. The Dancer series was started in Las Vegas and was inspired by the liveliness and attitude of its nightlife. While between studios, I painted some of the dancers in New York and in Las Vegas. I drew inspiration from both cities and named each piece after the city where it was born.

Schuhs

The shoe, or “Schuh,” series is inspired by my last name. My appreciation for my name began when I decided not to change it when the opportunity arose. I wasn’t always a fan of it and couldn’t spell my own name until I was around ten years old. Just as the process of making art takes time, it took me time to love Hohenschuh.
