Artist Statement
I paint my internal chaos and capture the motion of my everyday life. Bubbles appear in my work as counterbalances to that chaos, representing stillness and fragility. Their precious, temporary nature reminds me of the fleeting nature of life.
I am interested in movement. The first motion painting I ever saw was George Belows, and maybe even before that, Degas. I was first interested in motion and then looked into futurism.
My interest in shoes (schuhs) and futurism makes me feel some sort of guilt. Although my German family came to America after slavery and before WWII, there is a sort of closeting of pride in being of German heritage. Americans are displaced and become unaware of their roots. The people in my paintings overlap, indicating movement, loss, or displacement.
I am interested in the traditional animation process, such as rotoscoping. A hand-drawn animation I made in college was the reference for my first motion drawing.
I make art for art's sake, but instead I call it bubbles for bubbles' sake. As humble as a bubble I paint, not expecting to change the world, but hoping to make someone smile one bubble at a time.
